All About Lips: How to Rock that Bold Lip
Let’s just get this out there: a bold lip is scary. It’s intimidating and not for the faint of heart. I didn’t start wearing bold lips until about 2 years ago. Before that, I just wore Chapstick. That’s right, I said it. I didn’t bother with any lip color at all! But don’t worry- I’m here to help if you’re nervous!
First things first is to pick a formula and pick a shade. If you’re really new to makeup and want to ease your way into things, I might look into a gloss. You’ll get used to seeing color on your lips and applying product to the lips. Once you get used to that, you can graduate to a normal lipstick. I’m a big fan of liquid lipsticks because they last longer on my lips and are a little more “no fuss.” But the drying sensation isn’t for everyone. The shade can make a big difference as well. A classic blue red (or cool-toned red) is a classic bold lip and a staple, IMO. But go with what you gravitate towards! If you have been liking that pinky gloss, maybe go for a bright pink. Or if you are digging the peach tone trend, try a bright peach or coral!
For me, the best trick is a lip liner. It not only makes application easier for me, but it also helps the color last longer. I prefer one the same shade as the lipstick, but I’m still growing my lip liner collection so sometimes I go with a nude shade. The liner will give you a nice guide to use and it’s less pressure because it’s just a pencil. I tend to overline my lips a little bit just to even them out. Then I go in with lip color. I tend to take more time if it’s a standard lipstick because I find liquid lippie wands easier. The last step is to go in with concealer and a brush to perfect the shape of the lips and make the bold color stand out more. Honestly, I rarely apply concealer (ain’t nobody got time for that!)
Once I started doing bold lips, I can’t stop! I wear one at least 2-3 times a week. It’s the best to just throw on mascara, concealer, and bronzer and a bold lip and look pulled together instantly! Honestly, it’s a big self-confidence struggle. Once I realized I was nervous because I didn’t want people looking at me, things shifted for me. But there’s also a weird confidence boost that comes from a great bold lip. Like yes- I am wearing hot pink and I am going to kick butt while doing it!
