Easy Back to School Makeup Look!
I know back-to-school season has started, and some students have already started classes! Where I work, the college students are just finishing up their first week of classes so I thought it’d be a great idea to think up a simple look using all drugstore products. I was trying to keep in mind a high school or college age student who wants some coverage and to look awake in class, but is not trying to get glam with dramatic eyeliner and lashes.
For a simple makeup look, I normally start off with the face. I will admit that I have not personally found a primer from the drugstore that I have loved. There are a couple on my list to try (NYX Angel Veil is one I need to find!) Depending on your skin type, I would recommend a pore-filling primer or a hydrating primer with the products I’m about to talk about next. I discovered this combo a week or so ago and was actually really surprised at how it turned out! I love the coverage and the longevity of the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation, but I do find that it can look so overly matte on the skin that it just doesn’t look natural anymore. Well, when I got the NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Gleam in my ipsy bag I wanted to try mixing the two products to see how it turned out. The formula and longevity isn’t affected at all, but the illuminator makes your foundation look more natural and gives your skin a subtle glow. But still no shine or oil peeking through after 8 hours- it’s a perfect match! My favorite way to apply this is with the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge and I also use that to blend in my concealer. My favorite concealer from the drugstore lately is the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Conceal in Fair because it’s such great coverage but I can also use it to highlight underneath the eyes, which helps with tired eyes at 6:30am when you have to get ready for school. I usually apply this to the bridge of my nose and under-eye area, then using what’s left on the sponge in the middle of the forehead and chin just to even everything out. I use the Maybelline Fit Me Set and Smooth Powder just to set the concealer because with this foundation, there’s really no need to powder even if you’re oily! I know that seems like a lot of steps when it’s all written out like this, but it really is super easy and takes no time at all!
Since this look is really meant to focus more on looking awake and ready for class, I went simple with the eyes. Just use bronzer on a fluffy brush in your crease- you don’t have to be careful or precise at all. I still have yet to try the best bronzers at the drugstore but for this look, I grabbed the Pacifica bronzer I just got in my ipsy bag. After that, run eyeliner on your upper and lower lash lines. My favorite from the drugstore is the L’Oreal Voluminous Smouldering Eyeliner. I have both brown and black and go back and forth between the two shades depending on my mood but for this day I used brown to keep everything on the natural side. You can skip the eyeliner on the lower lash line if you prefer not to use eyeliner and just run more of the bronzer on the lower lash line instead. To finish up the eyes, just apply mascara! I grabbed the wrong mascara last time I bought something from the drugstore so for this look I used L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes. It’s actually a pretty decent mascara for separating and volumizing, but it doesn’t really wow me. I’m sure there are other awesome mascaras from the drugstore though! If you wanted an extra pop on the lid, you could use your highlight shade on the lid as well.
Speaking of highlight shades, it’s time for finishing touches! I didn’t want to do anything too precise or structured because you’re just trying to put enough product on your face to look fresh and awake and then get out the door! So for bronzer, use the same shade you used on your eyes and use a fluffy brush to apply that to the tops of the forehead, jawline, and the hollows of the cheeks. Done. Then for blush, I purchased Essence Silky Touch Blush in Babydoll based off of KathleenLights’ recommendation and it’s such a pretty natural blush with a glow. Perfect for a soft natural look like this. Want some highlight in your life too? I need to try more drugstore highlights but my go-to is the Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Tiki. I will never understand how this is labelled as a bronzer because this is definitely a great highlight for fair to medium skin tones. You could also use the other side of the Pacifica bronzer duo I liked earlier, but to be honest I haven’t tried it so I don’t know how that highlight shade applies to the face.
Putting this look together was actually a little harder than I thought it would be. Obviously, you can add or remove steps based off of how much time you have or how you prefer to wear makeup. If you hate foundation, just throw on some concealer, powder, and bronzer and that would look great too. Remember that this is makeup we’re talking about so feel free to create your own rules. I realized doing this look that I don’t have a whole lot of drugstore products to choose from! So, this post may have also just inspired me to go on a drugstore haul to try new products. Drugstore goodies can’t ruin the budget too much, right? Have any suggestions for my haul? Leave them below!
